A fence for horses needs to be designed and constructed with a dual purpose in mind. It not only has to be strong enough to contain them in their pasture, paddock or corral but the fence itself needs to be safe for the horse.

Horse owners and equestrian boarding facilities around Calgary have been moving away from barbed wire fences to other, safer alternatives. Post and Rail fence is a natural choice because it's strong and looks great. Plank fence is another great choice and offers a rustic appearance with rough cut planks or can have a more finished appearance with plained and pressure treated planks (see our plank fence section). The top rail and no climb mesh wire fence also makes an excellent choice. The top rail provides strength and rigidity while the 2" x 4" x 48" Class III galvanized smooth wire squares below the top rail prevent hooves from penetrating and getting caught up in the fence eliminating injury that other wire fences can cause. For additional strength and appearance we tension the wire to help prevent it from going slack over time.

For all horse fences we build, any sharp wooden corners are trimmed and no sharp or pointy wires stick out that can scratch or cause eye injuries. Foothills Fencing Inc believes a little extra thought, care and attention to detail goes a long way into building a better, safer fence for horses.
